SAMMEND: From a public health respective, physical activity in children and
adolescents is seen as important for desease prevention and health
promotion. Physical activity pattern are learned through
socialization processes where one of the influential sources is the
school trought physical education clases. The purpose of the present
study was (1) to examine young adolescents` general perception of
physical education classes, and (2) to expore the relationship
between these perceptions and students`social resources, gender and
level of leisure time physical activity and self-evaluated competense
in physical education. A total of 895 seventh grader(13 year olds)
were surveyed in Norway concerning their perception of physical edu
cation classes. Indicators of social resources were chosen from the
arenas of family, friends and school. The mind finding was that a
majority of students liked physical education classes. Physical
education classes seemed, however, not to offer the less socially
resourceful minority the same opportunities for positive experience
with physical activity as the resourceful majority. Boys` general
perception of physical education classes seemed to be moore positiv
than girls` and physically active students perceived physical
education classes mo r e favorably than less physically active
students

SAMMEND: Total physical activity scores, based on level of participation in 13
types of activies for 2658 black and white woman aged 18 to 30 years
were examined in relation to demographic, health behaviour,
psychosocial, and obesity data to compare levels of physical activity
and determine reasons for disparities between black and white. Black
nwomen had lower scores than white woman-geometric mean of 178 (95%
confidence interval (CI): 167, 189) versus 318 (95% CI:305,332).
After controlling for age and education, physical activity was
associated with physical activity level before high school, life
event score, John Henryism, and competitiveness in both groups. In
white women only, it was associated with alcohol intake and need to
excel, and negatively assosiated with number of children, number og
cigarettes smoked, and fatness. Race remained a predictor of physical
activity after controlling for each variable. Relationships between
physical activity and age, education, cigarette smoking, and life
event differed significantly by race. Black women had lower physical
activity levels than white women, which may contribute to higher
rates of obesity and coronary heart disease. Racial differences in
physical activity remain largely unexplained by the factors examined.

SAMMEND: Limited attention has been paid to the importance which adults attach
to dental, as opposed to other, life events. Consequently, the
purpose of the present study was to derermine how Norwegian adults
rate the need for adjustment to cope with losing teeth og getting
dentures, relative to some other life events, and to study effects of
age, gender, level of education, place of residence, smoking,
drinking and exercise habits. A representative, simple rendom sample
of 400 residents of the County of Hordaland aged 20-69 yr received a
mail questionnaire plus one reminder requesting demographic
information and completion of a 48-item Social Readjustment Rating
Questionnaire (SRRQ) in May 1990. The mean age of the 284 who resp
onded (71) was 41.1 yr (SD=13.5 yr). The replies to the SRRQ were
given on a graphic rating scale with end points "not difficult at
all"(0 cm) and "more difficult than anything"(20cm). Mean values were
calculated and used to rank the life events. "Losing one or more
teeth" was ranked 30(#~x=11.8:SD=5.6) and "getting dentures" 33(#~x=
13.8;SD=5.5). "Losing one or more teeth" was on a par with life
events like "trouble with other relatives"(#~x=11.7). "Getting
dentures" occupied a position between "trouble with wife/husband"
(#~x=14.3) and wif e/huband stopping work" (#~x=13.8). Multiple
Classification Analysis revealed significant effects of education on
"losing one or more teeth"; and of age, sex and education on "gettin
g dentures" (P<0.05). Furthermore, it was found that these two dental
life events required an above average degree of readjustment
according to the Social Readjustment Rating Question naire.

SAMMEND: Abstract. - This inquiry focuses on the relationship between various
social network variables and psychologically and bodily experienced
complaints in a non-problem (normal) adolescent population. It is bas
based on data from 1684 9.th grade pupils participating in the
Norwegian part of an intrnationl study. The main findings show that
increasing amount of (assumed) network quality correlates with
decreasing amount of complaints, this relationship being strong for
psychologically than for bodely experienced complaints. Loneliness as
an inte rvening variable explains a large proportion, but far from
all of the relationship between network variables and complaints.

Tanzania-Norwegian AIDS Project currently being implementet in the
Arusha and Kilemanjaro regions, we focus on some of the consequences
the HIV/AIDS epedemic seems to have for families, the health care
system and the educational sector in local communities. The AIDS
epidemic bring within a new kind of stress that is causing
psycho-social and economic burden for an increasing number of
families. For families overcoming the stigma attached to AIDS, coping
with theexstra economic burden when family providers contract AIDS
and caring for the increasing number of orphans are three of the main
challenges created by the current HIV/ AIDS epidemic.Similarly, the
growing epidemic is posing new challenges to an already overburdened
health care system an primary public education. While, to an large
extent. Tanzania has the personnel necessary to provide AIDS-related
care and HIV preventive services, the economic situation has made it
extremely difficult to provide these, and the epedemic is currently a
major th reat to the future health and development of local
communities.

SAMMEND: A study designet to assess the effectivness of a seventh grade social
norms and skill-based educational progam was developed and
implemented in callaboration with home economics teachers at four
junior high schools in Bergen, Norway. Healthy eating behavior and
healthy eating knowledge were assessed prior to, and 5 and 12 months
after the initiation of the nutrition program. Surveys including a
short food-frequency questionnaire and questions regarding knowledge
of healthy eating were administred to participating seventh grade
students. A total of 447 students (92.0) participated and both
baseline and first follow-up survey, while 415 (85.4) participated
at baseline and second follow-up. The implementation of this program
demonstrated that it is feasible to integrate curriculum activities
designed to modify students eating behavior in home economics
courses. Furthermoor, the results indicated that females receiving
the intervention reported healthier eating behaviors both at 5 and 12
month follow-ups. For males, we observed a significant short-term
positiv effect on eating behavior as well as a maintained positive
impact on healthy eating knowledge. It is recommended that future sch
school-based nutrition education research focus on providing models
for ef fective use and incorporation of behavioral change strategies
into existing school curricula.

SAMMEND: Abstract. HIV/AIDS- community counselling, a multifaceted approach to
fighting AIDS and its consequences, is an ongoing activity in a
village in the region of Arusha. The counsellors are local community
members who have received training and supervision from MUTAN. At the
onset of the counselling process, the village was characterized as a
high risk area for HIV transmission. Many people in the village had a
risky sexual behaviour pattern. The knowledge about AIDS was high,
but people did not realize that the virus actually existed in their
village. The chapter describes the first phases of an ongoing
counselling process, illustrates how the community counsellers are
working and how the inhabitants are gradually changing.

SAMMEND: The objective of the study is to identify key characteristics of an
HIV/AIDS counsellor who would prove to be culturally acceptable for
the particular problems associated with HIV/AIDS in Arusha and
Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. HIV/AIDS counselling in the hospitals is
recommended by the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and by WHO. Ther was
a need to check whether theories of counselling, developed in Western
societies, would be valid in an African context. Few research reports
exist on counselling in Africa. No previous studies have been
conducted to identify locally important characteristics relevant for
the Tanzanian HIV/AIDS hospital counsellor. A qualitative research
approach is used. Methods of data collection are interviews and focus
groups. A phenomenological and hermeneutical mode of analyzing the
data is utilized. In spite of difference in the cultural context, the
data fit Western theories on client-centred counselling. Informants
were more concerned with the social consequences of the disease than
with the technical facts of AIDS. Stigma and fear of rejection are
seen as majorp roblems of HIV/AIDS. The findings indicate that
confidentiality is central and that hospital counsellors must balance
the fact-giving approach with a person-centred approach, explori ng
the client's problem conception and identifying who in the client's
network can give the further necessary psycho-social support.

SAMMEND: The purpose of this study was to report upon the dimensionality of a
learned emotional trait disposition assumed to generalize to all
kinds of sexual activities ('erotophobia-erotophilia') using the
Sexual Opinion Survey (SOS) comprising 21 items. The empirical data
stem from a nationwide Norwegian study among 17-19 year olds in 1988
(response rate=60.9%; N=1827 of whom 1172 persons had sexual
intercourse experience). Dimensionality was studied in terms of
factor analysis, internal consistency reliability and construct
validity using external criteria. Factor analysis indicated that the
SOS scale represents four seperate and distinct dimensions which
could be meaningfully interpreted. Alpha coefficients varied from
0.884 to 0.430 for the four subscales. The construct validity
procedure seemed to confirm the multidimensionality of the scale,
thus the subscales correlated differentially with externalc riteria.

SAMMEND: This paper discusses the significance of living arrangements for the
adoption of health behaviors in a national sample of 1458 adolescents
and young adults in the age group 16-25 years in Norway. Living
arrangements were operationalized in terms of living with spouse or
partner, living with parents/siblings og living alone. Results from
multiple logistic regression analyses showed that the effect of
living arrangements was most significant for health compromising
behaviors, i.e. smoking and alcohol consumption. Results from
discriminant analyses indicated that adolescent men and women
constituted two separate systems of engagement in health behaviors
but that living arrangements functioned in the same manner within
each system.

SAMMEND: Lærepakken er utviklet for undervisning i helsefremmende arbeid. Den
kombinerer informasjon om forhold som har betydning for vår helse med
analyse av forskningsdata om skolebarns helsevaner. Pakken bygger på
den norske delen av undersøkelsen "Helsevaner blant skolebarn : En
flernasjonal WHO-undersøkelse." I datamaterialet finnes svar fra vel
5000 skoleelever fra 167 skoler. I tillegg til datamaterialet består
pakken av et klassesett med elevhefter samt et eget hefte for
læreren. I lærepakkens elevhefte behandles temaene kosthold, fritid,
alkohol og røyking. Innen hvert tema gis først en presentasjon av
fakta. Her finnes også arbeidsoppgaver der elevene selv skal ta
stilling til og skaffe utfyllende informasjon om problemstillingene
som tas opp. Etter faktapresentasjonen gis eksempler på aktuelle
problemstillinger som kan belyses ved hjelp av datamaterialet.
Elevene ledes her gjennom de ulike analysene steg for steg. De blir
også presentert for en rekke arbeidsoppgaver hvor de oppfordres til å
arbeide videre med datamaterialet på egenhånd. Det er lagt vekt på å
unngå moralisering . Elevene skal på grunnlag av faktapresentasjonen
og deres eget arbeid med temaet og analysene selv trekke slutninger
om hvordan deres egen helseatferd er og hvordan de bør og ønsker å
leve. Lærerheftet gir en innføring i hvilke muligheter som ligger i
lærepakken. Det fokuseres både på hvordan det generelt kan arbeides
med de fire temaene i lærepakken, samt hvordan arbeidet med
dataanalysene kan foregå i praksis. For å kunne ta i bruk dette
undervisningstilbudet, trenger skolen en skolelisens av
analyseverktøyet NSDstat. Lærepakken og analyse programmet selges hos
NSD.

their adjustment to school which again is important to their reported
health. In the survey "Health Behaviourin School-Aged Children. A WHO
Cross-National Survey." we want to study the relation between
psychosocial work environment and reported health. This relation will

SAMMEND: This paper presents findings trends among 13/14 year olds in seven
European countries in four key areas of lifestyle (smoking, alcohol
consumption, diet and physical activity) whic h are risks factors for
a range of adults degenerative diseases. The data are drawn from two
large scales surveys conducted across Europe in 1985-86 and 1989-90,
as part of the WorldHealth Organisation cross-national Health
behaviour in School-aged children study. The results show an
encouraging increase in participation in leisure time exercise by
13/14 year old s across Europe, but little overall change in smoking
prevalence, alcohol misuse, or consumtion of unhealthy foods. Some of
the implications of these findings for yo health promotion in Europe
are discussed.

SAMMEND: The objective was to study the dimensionality of knowledge among
general practitioners in Norway about transmission of HIV and what
factors influence the degree of knowledge. Datawere collected by a
mailed questionnaire. Independent variables were experience of HIV,
acquisition of knowledge and confidence on information on HIV from
the central authorities andperception of own knowledge, skills of
practice and fear of oneself or one's family contracting the HIV
infection. Analysis of variance and multiple classification analysis

SAMMEND: Within a health promotion perspectiv, nationwide surveys on health
behaviour and lifestyle in 11-to 15-year-old schoolchildren were
carried out in Finland, Norway and Sweden in 1985-1986. The surveys
were part of an international World Health Organization study on
health behaviour in schoolagd children. The findings suggest that
social, fun and health motives a re perceived as the main motivations
for sport participation. Competition and achievements were not rated
as important reasons for liking sport, with older pupils seeming to a
attach more importance to sport being fun.

SAMMEND: The project "Nutrition among young adults" (NAYA) is part of the Oslo
Youth Study (OYS), which is a 12 year-longitudinal inquiry. The objec
objectives of the OYS were to obtain epidemiological data about
cardiovascular disease, canser risk factors and related behaviors
among adolescents. Data were collected in 1979, 1981, 1989 and 1991.
In the 1979 investigation the participants were 10-14 years old
(N=1040). They completed a questionnaire which focused on their
behavior and attitudes to smoking, alcohol, eating, and physical
activity. They also participated in a medical exsamination. Parents
to these adolescents were also asked to complete a questionnaire
about their own health-related attitudes and behavior. The 1981i
nvestigation (N=718) was similar to the 1979-study.In 1989 (=808),
the participants were asked to fill in a short questionnaire focusing
on the same questions as the previous exsaminations. Concerning the
1991 inquiry (N=707), the participants answered a detailed
questionnaire and took a medical examination. The questionnaire was
primarily interested in the participants eating behaviors. NAYA is
primarily based on the data from the 1991- investigation. The
participants were then 23-26 years old. The purpose was to
investigate factors that influence the eating behavior among this age
group. The study examines the eating behaviors of young adults using
Fishbein and Ajzens`Extended Theory of Reasoned Action, Social
Network T h eory, and Bourdieu`s Theory of Class Position and
Livestyles.

SAMMEND: De data som presenteres her stammer fra "Voksen i År 2000", som er en
omfattende longitudinell undersøkelse om helseatferd og livsstil
blant ungdom i Hordaland fylke. Prosjektet er et tiårig
togenerasjonsstudium der det også samles inn opplysninger fra
foreldre. Den første datainnsamlingen ble utført i 1990. De
foreliggende data om tannhelseatferd ble samlet inn høsten 1992 fra
et representativt utvalg av 963 elever i niende klasse i Hordaland.
For å kunne drive virkningsfulle forebyggende programmer trenger vi
tre typer informasjon: problem-, årsaks- og tiltaksinformasjon. Denne
rapporten handler om tannhelsevaner blant 15 åringer i Hordaland på
grunnlag av de data som ble samlet inn høsten 1992. Rapporten har tre
hovedformål: - å beskrive nivå og fordeling av ulike former for
tannhelseatferd (probleminformasjon) ved hjelp av tre uavhengige
variabler, forklare intensjon om å bruke tanntråd og å drikke
sukkerfritt mineralvann (årsaksinformasjon) og å undersøke mere
detaljert den underliggende motivasjonsstrukturen for effektivt å
kunne påvirke de to ovenfornevnte atferdene (tiltaksinformasjon).
Tilsammen vil avhengige tannhelseatferdsvariabler bli analysert i
forhold til tre uavhengige variabler: kjønn, venneorientering og
sosial status. Den viktigste prediktor for tannhelseatferd var kjønn.
Sammenhengene mellom tannhelseatferd og venneorientering er derimot
svake og ikke statistisk signifikante for de fleste variablene.
Unntaket var bruk av tannbørste og konsum av både sukret og usukret
mineralvann som hadde sammenheng med venneorientering (p<0.001).
Konsum av sukret mineralvann var den eneste atferdvariabel som had de
sammenheng med sosial status (p<0.001).
