pasienter, hvorav ca 40% var over 20 år. Indikasjon for behandling
43% for vanlig tannbehandling. Frekvensen av registrerte
komplikasjoner var 9% under behandlingene, men de fleste av disse
var beskjedne og helt ufarlige. Brekning forekom i 19 tilfeller
(0,6%), men i ingen tilfeller skjedde aspirasjon. Evalueringen viser
at lystgass-sedasjon er et nyttig hjelpemiddel for pasienter med
tannlegeskrekk, og at norske tannleger kan anvende dette på en trygg
måte etter en opplæring som den de fikk i forsøksutdanningen.

TITTEL : The prevalence of caries in groups of children aged 4-5 and 7-8 years
in Khartoum, Sudan.

SAMMEND: A total of 544 children, 275 pre-school children (aged 4-5 years) and
269 school children (aged 7-8 years), were examined for dental caries
using WHO criteria with some modifications. The children were
resident in Khartoum, Sudan. The mean dmft was 1.68 in the 4-5-year
group, and 58% of them were caries-free. In the 7-8-year group the
mean dmft (molars and canines) was 2.77, and 33% of the children
were caries-free. Most of the caries in both groups was untreated. In
decayed teeth which were beyond repair, occlusal caries was most
prevalent in the pre-school group and approximal caries most
prevalent in the school group. The mean DMFT in the 7-8-year group
was 0.15, and only occlusal surfaces in first molars were affected.
Ninety-four percent in the 7-year group and 88% in the 8-year group
were caries-free in the permanent dentition. When the children were
grouped according to their socio-economic level, there was no
statistically significant differences in caries prevalence between
the groups. Since this is the first comprehensive caries prevalence
study of the age groups in Sudan, it is impossible to conclude
whether caries is increasing or not. The prevalence of caries-free
preschool children is above the global goal of FDI/WHO for the year
2000, but below the goal for developing countries.

TITTEL : Fissure sealing with light-cured glassionomer cement composed with
resin.

SAMMEND: One major drawback of sealing with resins is that the clinical
procedure is extremely sensitive to moisture. Glassionomers may be
safely used in cases with poor moisture control, but they are easily
lost. Due to their release of fluoride, they may, however, prevent
caries even after being lost. The aim of the present study was to
evaluate the retention and caries inhibiting capacity of a single
application of a light-cured glassionomercement (Vitrebond) compared
with a light-cured resin (Concise White Sealant) in newly erupted
molars. The follow-up period is supposed to be 3 years, and this is a
presentation of results after 12 months. The study includes 73 pairs
of first and second molars (136 fissure sites) in 53 children. The
glassionomercement and the resin were placed bilaterally in each pair
of teeth. The sealants were checked for retention and caries after 1,
6 and 12 months. There was full retention of the resin during the
whole period. The glassionomercement showed full or partial retention
in 94%, 49% and 31% of the sites after 1, 6 and 12 months. The
preliminary conclusion of the study is that the retention of the
glassionomercement during the first months after application may
justify it's use as an alternative to resins in newly erupted teeth .

SAMMEND: The term, retarded eruption, may be used in cases where eruption is
prevented, causing an interruption in the coordination of tooth
formation and tooth eruption. The phenomenon may be local or general,
and several causes for retarded eruption have been listed. The
present presentation comprises only cases where no other etiological
factors than inheritance have been disclosed. So far 14 cases have
been evaluated, 9 boys and 5 girls. In addition several cases have
been registered among relatives. Typical features are: The retarded
eruption d efined as late eruption more than 3 SD from mean eruption
figures, comprises all teeth in the permanent dentition and in a few
cases also the second primary molars. The chronology oftooth
formation is well within the normal limits. Thus, the teeth finish
their developement laying deeply buried in the jaws, often in
aberrant positions and with deviations and hooks in the roots. When
the teeth finally get the "signal" for eruption, however, they may
move rather quickly into right position, despite their long eruption
path and hooks on roots. Permanent teeth with as well as without
predecessors are affected. Extraction of their predecessors does not
seem to release eruption. Judged by the pedigrees, the genetic
transmittance seems to be autosomal dominant, as both sexes are
affected fairly equally, about half of the members in the kindred are
affected, and the trait seems not to skip a generation.
