Change in the publishing process
-
before: first print, then distribute
-
now to growing extent: first distribute, then print
An electronic publication can be
-
an independent publication available only in electronic form (CD-ROM, the
web)
-
a parallel electronic version of the printed publication
-
a supplement to the printed publication

-

Things to be considered when planning and starting electronic publishing
-
is the electronic form the only form for the publication or is it a parallel
form
-
if it is a parallel form, should it look the same as the printed version
-
is the publishing process centralized or decentralized
-
what rights are given to the reader of the publication
-
is the publication available free of charge or is it charged
-
copyright issues
How to use your word processor or publishing software
-
learn "structured" writing, i.e. use styles (templates)
-
let the word processor take care of hyphenation
-
when you want to start a new page, use Insert Page command
-
indent text by using styles or by defining paragraph indents, never with
tabs
-
create tables with table commands, never with tabs
-
use the equation editor for mathematics
-
embed images and graphics into the document, do not use link to file option
For more detailed instructions see:

Some basic rules
-
author's permission needed for the electronic version
-
photographer's permission needed for the photographs
.. and one more thing
-
the electronic version of an publication needs its own ISSN/ISBN number
which has to be mentioned also in the printed version-numeron, joka on
mainittava myös painetussa versiossa
Advantages of electronic publishing and publications

fast publishing channel
-
richer publications, multimedia can be used
-

Disadvatages of electronic publishing and publications

charging procedures not yet well established
-
copyright issues not yet solved
